Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur finds support from an unexpected source – Gautam Gambhir. The 35-year-old Indian cricketer came out to back the 20-year-old who has been subjected to savage online trolls for voicing her opinion against lawlessness witnessed at DU’s Ramjas College at the hands of ABVP workers. Gautam Gambhir is the first sportsperson to support Gurmehar Kaur after a string of celebrities joined in bashing up the girl including the likes of Virender Sehwag, Yogeshwar Dutt, the Phogat sisters – Geeta and Babita, Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda among many. Gautam Gambhir took to Twitter to blast those who are bullying and mocking 20-year-old student. Along with the video, the tweet reads: “The freedom of expression is absolute and equal for all. High time we learnt that and practised it daily in every sphere of life.” Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of martyred Kargil war hero Captain Mandeep Singh, posted a powerful video on Facebook in 2016 has got the girl in the major controversy.
The video which was aimed at promoting India-Pakistan peace showed her holding a placard reading “Pakistan did not kill my father, war did.” This was one line of a lengthy, beautiful and meaningful video post but the trolls are using this one particular line to mock Gurmehar Kaur. Not just ending at mocks and trolls, the DU student is issued with dire consequences like rape threats and physical harm.
Gurmehar Kaur became the target of cyber bullying because she is an anti-ABVP campaigner. The girl stood up against the rogue Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad students’ wing who is allegedly behaving like a loose cannon in the national capital. Gurmehar Kaur started her campaign against the harassment and lawlessness but got embroiled in the unnecessary controversy over an old video with internet miscreants threatening and trolling the girl.
What’s even worse is that online trolls included influential celebrities like Gambhir’s former opening partner, Virender Sehwag who poked fun at Gurmehar’s post. The DU Student was also slammed by gold medallist wrestlers Yogeshwar Dutt, Babita and Geeta Phogat and called an ‘anti-national’! Actors like Randeep Hooda who also joined in bullying Gurmehar feel it is a matter of laughter.
