Geeta Phogat, the eldest daughter of former Indian wrestler Mahavir Phogat is one of India’s flag bearers in bringing recognition to the country in world of wrestling. A true champion, Geeta won India’s first ever gold medal in women’s wrestling at the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. She defeated Emily Bensted from Australia in the 55kg women’s freestyle gold medal wrestling match. The golden girl after winning the gold medal was quoted saying, “”The semifinal against the Nigerian was difficult. After winning that, I was sure of getting the gold medal.”

Born on December 15, 1988, Geeta Phogat is also the first-ever Indian female wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics. She participated in the 2012 London Olympics. The 28-year-old is also the recipient of prestigious Arjuna Award. Geeta recently got married to Pawan Kumar, also a Commonwealth medal winning wrestler. Dangal, a sports biopic on the famous Phogat family, is receiving positive reviews from all circles. 51-year-old actor Aamir Khan is essaying the role of Mahavir Phogat while Fatima Sana Sheikh plays Geeta Phogat. Geeta’s younger sister and also a successful wrestler coached by their father, Babita Kumari is played by Sanya Malhotra. Babita Kumari followed her elder sister’s path to bring a gold medal for India. Babita won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow much to the joy of countrymen.
