It is almost the end of 2017, and like every year, we can’t believe how quickly the year has gone by. In the past 365 days, the world witnessed several events, trends and issues – from grave incidents of terror in several parts of the world, #MeToo trend on social media, blockbuster movies to new rules passed by the government, including linking Aadhar to Pan Card. And invariably, each time we come across a new trend or issue, we ‘search’ for it on Google to know more. Using this data, Google has released a series of nine lists called ‘Year in Search 2017’. Among these is a list on the songs that were trending in India in 2017, and Hindi film’s Mubarakan’s Hawa Hawa has topped this list! The song is a remake of an older song by the same name, and was quite a hit among the audiences.
The top 5 list has just one English song. Google states that the lists are based on search terms that had a high spike in traffic in 2017 as compared to 2016. In the overall trends for 2017, Bollywood clearly dominated the list with Bahubali 2, Half Girlfriend and Dangal. Indian Premier League and Live Cricket Score were the other two search terms in the overall list. That apart, ‘how to link Aadhar with Pan card’ and ‘how to book Jio phone’ were among the most searched list of ‘How to’s’.
Here are the top 5 songs of 2017:
1. Hawa Hawa
Hawa Hawa is a song from the Anil Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Ileana d’Cruz and Athiya Shetty starrer Mubarakan. Although the film was much hyped due to the combination of chacha-bhatija coming together, it managed to do average business at the box office. But the song was a huge hit and has garnered over 100 million views on YouTube. It has been sung by Mika Singh and Prakriti Kakar. This song is a remake of the 1980s hit track sung by Pakistani artist Hasan Jahangir.
2. Mere Rashke Qamar
Illeana d’Cruz is a part of another hit song of 2017, Mere Rashke Qamar. This song, from the film Baadshaho, has crossed over 135 million views on YouTube. The romantic song has a beautiful classical touch to it and makes for a melodious listening. No wonder then that it made it to the top 5 songs of 2017. Several dance cover versions of this song have been released in the past few months.
This is the only English song which has made it to the top 5 of the most searched songs of 2017 in India. Voiced by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, Despacito was nothing short of a frenzy in India and also several parts of the world. From Indian versions of the song to Indians attempting to sing the Spanish song, the internet saw several cover versions. Despacito was also nominated for Grammy song of the year award.
4. Dil Diyan Gallan
Not surprisingly, Tiger Zinda Hai’s Dil Diyan Gallan makes it to the top 5. Although the song was released barely a few days ago, it marks the return of the hit pair of Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Sung by Atif Aslam, this romantic song from Tiger Zinda hai has close to 4 crore views on YouTube and has been shot in picturesque snow-clad locations.
This is a rehashed version of the song from the Hindi film Agent Vinod which starred Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The rehashed song has been used in the film Raabta, that has Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon in lead roles. Arijit Singh and Nikita Gandhi have sung the new version that has been picturised on Deepika Padukone (guest role). Deepika looks exceptionally hot in this romantic song.
Besides these five, the other songs in the list include Ding Dang from Munna Michael, Kabil from the eponymous film, Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, Mubarakan’s title track and Mile Ho Tum Humko from the movie Fever. Of course, while these were the most searched songs (or rather top 10), there were numerous other songs in 2017 that were a huge hit. Which ones were your favourite?
