Written and directed by A.R. Murugadoss and starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha, Holiday – A Soldier is Never Off Duty is a remake of the Tamil blockbuster film Thuppakki.

The movie revolves around obviously a soldier, Virat (Akshay Kumar), on holiday who gets embroiled in a terror plot. Of course. Virat ends up meeting Saiba (played by Akki’s favourite leading lady Sonakshi Sinha) and the usual Bollywood flirting sessions begin.

(SPOILER) Just when you think Akshay has taken a holiday from his usual action avatar, the tone of the movie changes as it’s revealed that the hero is also a secret agent working for the Indian government.

A few quick but brilliant action shots later, a suave terrorist is introduced and you know you are in for an action-thriller extravaganza. While the romantic bit may seem ordinary and frivolous especially in the second half, Holiday is an absorbing, pacy, gripping film.

Please do not confuse Holiday with any other quintessential Akshay Kumar masala movie, it is not! Murugadoss has made an intelligent film, keeping the script tight, merging all the key elements of drama, comedy and romance well while retaining the serious message the film conveys about the sacrifices our Jawans in the army make for us day in and day out.

With Holiday, Akshay Kumar, is back and how. The gorgeous actor delivers on every level – be it action, dancing, comedy or romance. Sonakshi Sinha looks lovely. And for now that’s all that can be said about her. Govinda in a special appearance, Sumeet Raghavan and Farhad aka Freddy Daruwala ace as does the rest of the cast. Rating: 3.5/5.
