At a time when sexual assault has become a daily occurrence across the world, an MIT researcher has developed a product that can help tackle the issue. Manisha Mohan, a research assistant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States has developed a ‘smart sticker’ sensor that can prevent sexual assault or rape in real time by alerting people. Known as Intrepid the device sends a message to the victim’s safety circle alerting them. The sensor on the device detect signs of an assault when the victim is unconscious, cannot fight the assaulter or conscious but in troble. The device works in both passive and active mode and can set off loud alarms by touching a button. Intrepid can be attached to any type of clothing and can be washed.

The firm which makes the product said that the sticker will combat sexual abuse, rapes and other assault. Talking about the product MIT researcher Manisha Mohan says she considered sexual assault “a disease in our society, which needs an immediate cure.” Talking about the product, the company said in a statement, “Our clothing design is based on input from sexual assault survivors, 338 online participants, 67 volunteers and 20 users who helped us understand the real world feasibility of our system.” Install high-mast lights in parks, public toilets for women’s safety: Delhi LG

Narrating her own experience, Manisha Mohan says, “In the name of safety, many times women have been told to stop working or asked to be indoors, and I think instead of asking them to be indoors, we should have more safety for them.” The device is a small sticker-like device paired with a smartphone app. It uses information from the environment, such as attempts to remove the clothing, to understand the situation. In such cases, the device will send a message to the wearer which asks if they consent. If the person does not answer within a certain amount of time, it will let out a loud noise. After an additional 30 seconds, it will send alert messages to your safety circle.
