Living up to its signature quirky style when celebrating important days of the year, search engine Google, today features the word “woman” in 11 different languages and within colourful boxes on the homepage to mark International Women’s Day. In it’s bid to upscale inspiring stories of women achievers, the doodle plays a brief slideshow carrying inspirational quotes from 13 notable women across the world, from past and present both, who struggled to make it big.

Google told leading news organisation Independent, “We aimed to include a diverse representation of voices on a day which celebrates the past, present, and future community of diverse women around the world.”

The first quote in the slideshow, “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations,” is by Dr Mae Jemison, NASA’s first African-American woman astronaut while the second slide features the work of Argentinian graphic designer Yai Salinas, who illustrated Frida Kahlo’s words, “Feet, what do I need them for if I have wings to fly?”

The next slide shows the design created by German designer and lettering artist Rosa Kammermeier, with the words of German writer Emma Herwegh, “Let nothing bind you in the world other than your highest inner truth.”

The slide show also featured two Indian women’s quote, one by Mary Kom and the other by NL Beno Zephine, India’s first visually challenged diplomat. While Mary Kom’s power-packed quote read, “Do not ever say you are weak because you are a woman,” Beno Zephine’s inspiration dripping quote read, “We are too precious to let disappointments enter our minds.” The two Indian women made an appearance in the list along with the likes of Yoko Ono, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and others.

International Women’s day is celebrated every year on March 8. It is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International. This day celebrates the womanhood and contribution of women to society and it also commemorates women’s rights. The day is important in parts of the world where women are still forced to deal with shocking inequality on a daily basis and are meant to raise awareness of the challenges and struggles faced by these women.
