Coming as a balm on the burns of rising religious tensions in the country, world’s largest archive of Urdu poetry and literature, Rekhta Foundation, shared a throwback video of Bollywood writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar narrating an incident of breaking stereotypes and the viral video has lately been breaking the Internet. In his witty persona, Javed recalled the time when he stumped the cast and crew of the film Yugandhar with his extended knowledge of different names of Krishna than known by all of them combined.
The throwback video from the 5th Jashn-e-Rekhta event in 2018, shows Javed seated in a panel discussion, recalling the incident. “Let me narrate to you an incident while coming up with a film Yugandhar, directed by N. Chandra. Yugandhar means one who can change the world. The music in the film was by Laxmikant Pyarelal. I was the lyricist. One day, when I reached, the director and music director Laxmikant looked a bit awkward. I asked them what the next situation and tune was on which the lyrics had to be written. After hesitating for some time they told me reluctantly that they wanted to include an aarti of Krishna given the demand of the situation. Hearing them, their problem became clear to me. I asked them to give me the tune and we will figure something out,” said Javed hiding a smile.
He added, “They gave me the tune and next day I went and told them that the tune that you had given me was of a song and not typical of an aarti. Aarti has a crescendo and does not end flatly. Aarti reaches a crescendo and since you did not give me the tune, I have written it as per my knowledge. You compose it accordingly.”
Javed then went on to tell how he had penned the whole crescendo around Krishna and as he narrated the lines, the crowd broke into thunderous applause. He was then asked how does he happen to know so many names of Krishna which even they were not aware of to which the ace lyricist replied, “I study Urdu hence, I know.” Javed revealed that he had learnt all those names from Urdu shayari.
The moderator of the panel discussion then shared that the bhajan sung by Asha Bhosle in the film Lagaan too was written by Javed Akhtar.
