JK Rowling has finally broken her silence on the casting of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise. In a rare update to her website, she responded to the recent backlash received over the actor’s casting in the movie. Many fans have been upset over Johnny Depp’s casting in the light of domestic abuse allegations against him. He had allegedly verbally and physically abused his ex-wife Amber Heard. Johnny Depp and his ex-wife settled the matter in court and Amber Heard donated the entire amount to women’s support groups. However, people are still miffed at Johnny Depp’s casting and backlash has continued on the second movie’s title (The Crimes of Grindelwald) was announced. Producer David Yates when questioned about the actor’s inclusion did not give a satisfactory answer which in turn fueled more brickbats.

Amidst all these controversies JK Rowling had remained silent. However, now the author of Harry Potter books and the brain behind the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie franchise responded to the controversy with a statement on her website which quickly crashed. She also shared the update on her social media site like Facebook. She wrote, “Harry Potter fans had legitimate questions and concerns about our choice to continue with Johnny Depp in the role. The agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives, must be respected.” She further added, “The filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies.” Fantastic Beasts: Jude Law roped in as young Dumbledore, Twitter reacts with mixed emotions
