Gujarati girls are known for their sweet and charismatic personality. They are vivacious in addition to their stunning beauty. And it looks like Bollywood is smitten in love with Gujarati characters. After Anushka Sharma playing the role of Sejal Zaveri in Jab Harry Met Sejal, it is Kangana Ranaut’s turn to foray into the Gujarati territory. The three-time National Award winner is playing the titular role the in Hansal Mehta-directed Simran. The first teaser-trailer of Simran was released on August 8, and the movies buffs cannot stop talking about Kangana’s impressive acting skills. Simran is the second film in current times after Imtiaz Ali-directed Jab Harry Met Sejal to feature a Gujarati female protagonist. Anushka, Kangana are not the first ones with other Bollywood actresses such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor Khan among many to bring Gujju girls to life on the silver screen.
1. Kangana Ranaut – Simran
Kangana Ranaut plays a Gujarati kleptomaniac and gambler named Simran in Hansal Mehta’s next. The teaser shows the actress in the role of a fun-loving young divorcee who is dealing with ‘real-life character flow (flaw)’. She is smart as one of her colleagues point out her to be a perfect Gujarati. The film looks quite promising with fans expecting a lot from Kangana Ranaut-starrer releasing on September 15.
2. Anushka Shankar – Jab Harry Met Sejal
Anushka Sharma played a typical Gujarati girl in her latest release, Jab Harry Met Sejal. Her character’s name is Sejal Zaveri, and we see her obsessed with acting out the meaning of her name. Anushka learned Gujarati diction from her coach Dimple for her role as Sejal, a Gujarati girl. According to a DNA report, she said, “I learnt the Gujarati diction from my coach Dimple. We used to write down the words in the way they used to pronounce and then I used to work on my dialogues.
3. Deepika Padukone – Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela
Deepika Padukone excelled in the titular role of Leela in this Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s blockbuster film Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela in 2013. Her character showed a wide range – a young, passionate lover to a responsible head of the tribe who would go the length to keep the respect of her family high. The character Leela Sanera won Deepika her first Filmfare Award of the career.
4. Kareena Kapoor – Chup Chup Ke
She played a speech impaired girl who was an apple of her joint family. Playing the role of Shruti Singh Chauhan, Kareena had no dialogues but won audiences’ hearts with her cute expressions. Priyadarshan directed Chup Chup Ke was as Gujarati as one could get and the family films remains an interesting watch even today.
5. Aishwarya Rai – Guru, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s breakthrough film in Bollywood came with her iconic role of Nandini in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The film was a depiction of rich Gujarati environment, from food to costumes to music. The actress also featured in another memorable film portraying the role of Gujarati Belle. It was in 2007 Mani Ratnam film, Guru.
