VAmerican singer Katy Perry has been banned by China before an event scheduled next week where she is set to perform. China denied a visa to the celebrity ahead of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show where many models are expected to adorn the ramp. As per reports, models including Gigi Hadid and Irina Sharapova has also been banned from the country. Katy has been banned after she stirred up a controversy for accidentally supporting a protest against China in 2015. Her performance at a concert in Taiwan in which she wore the Taiwanese flag also created an outrage. Reportedly, Julia Belyakova and Kate Grigorievea were also denied a work visa.
Perry wore a sunflower dress in her 2015 concert in Taiwan which infuriated Chinese officials. The dress was seen as support to Taiwan’s “Sunflower Revolution” which took place in 2014 which was against China. However, a letter circulating on Chinese social media website, Weibo, says that Perry wrote a letter saying she would “observe and comply” with Chinese laws and regulations, ahead of the fashion show.
China does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country and consider it as a breakaway state. Taiwan is also not in the United Nations and is often stopped from using its national anthem and national flag in international events too. When Katy waved the Taiwanese flag during her concert critics believed it as expressing solidarity with the 2014 Sunflower Student Movement. Chinese social media users rose against Hadid after a now-deleted video circulated on the internet showed her squinting her eyes to mimic a Buddha doll.
