The Kochi metro rail has been a moment of pride for people of Kerala especially when the Prime Minister came to inaugurate it. On its maiden journey the Kochi metro rail had such esteemed dignitaries as Prime Minister Narendre Modi, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu and ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan as its passengers. However, Kerala BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan was also present as one of its first passengers. Now, Kochi metro officials want to name their blue baby elephant mascot and took to their Facebook page to ask people to come for suggestions as it did not want the regular ‘Appu’, ‘Kuttan’ or ‘Jumbo’ for it. And guess what, one of the suggestions that came forth was Kummanana and it is the most voted one too!

During the first journey of the Kochi metro some leaders unnecessarily had tried to fuel controversy saying that Kummanan Rajasekharan’s presence was a security breach but the matter was laid to rest when the PMO issued a statement saying that it decides who will attend Prime Minister’s Function and who will not and hence it was not a security breach. However, looks like Kummanan Rajasekharan’s presence had an impact on the netizens who now want the little blue baby elephant mascot named after the leader. The mascot is a little baby elephant with wings and a nettipattam )golden head covering used for elephants) and the people on the internet are asking it to be named after Kerala BJP chief.

However, once people started suggesting Kummanan the Kochi Metro Facebook page changed the rules of the contest saying that the name can’t be kept in order to defame or ridicule anyone. However, the people are really liking the name Kummanana and a new hashtag #SupportKummanana has also started appearing in the replies. Many people also pointed out that Kummanam is a place in Kottayam and Aana means elephant. We will just have to wait and watch for the Kochi Metro Facebook page to reveal the name of its mascot now because the contest is ending today.
