From the first look of the trailer, which runs to 1: 26 seconds, there are distinct traces of Crazy, Stupid, Love and The Notebook, with the latter proving to be an important  film in Ryan Gosling’s career. The heartthrob of Hollywood is joined by another superstar, Emma Stone here. In the trailer, the scenes segue through the journey of the two protagonists as Gosling plays on the piano, singing a solo in pain. Damien Chazelle, the young director who had directed the Oscar-winning masterpiece, Whiplash is helming this project, which has been receiving a lot of buzz ever since it went on the floors. The presence of the lead actors may well become the highlight of the film; Gosling and Stone are the only characters where the focus is on throughout the trailer.

There are some intense moments too and Chazelle has shown in his previous movies that he can tap into it. Whiplash was terrific in the manner in which the characters and their passion for music transcended and overpowered everything else. The climax, where the central protagonist brushes off a disastrous accident to still turn up at the venue where he is due to perform was powerful. Those are the moments that one looks for La La Land. With romance being the theme of the film, there is greater scope to explore emotions. Stone and Gosling, apart from their often discussed charm and beauty are capable of delivering a knockout performance too. Chazelle loves music to play a strong role in the narrative and it might not be different here either. The star of Whiplash, J.K. Simmons will be playing an important role too. He doesn’t appear in a single frame in the Trailer though.
