The residents of Keval Vihar, Dehradun, got a rude shock when a leopard entered a house in the colony on Shastrabudhe road and created chaos for hours. The leopard stayed in that area for around six hours. In the video, one can see how the leopard jumped over the boundary wall of a home and entered into the premises. Three people who were shocked over the same were seen running on the terrace and another woman also ran away in panic. Soon the panic ensued among other residents and many gathered around the site.
The Forest department which was to rescue the animal waited for hours for the vet to arrive as not a single person from the Forest division was trained to tranquilize the leopard. The leopard ran away just a few minutes before the veterinarian was about to tranquilize the animal. One of the residents of the house told TOI, “We had no idea that a leopard was hiding in my house. It was my neighbor who spotted the animal at 11 am and called me. I saw it lurking in my kitchen garden so I ran inside and locked the house.”

Vinod Sahni, who is one of the residents told TOI that he has been living in the colony for past 30 years but never encountered such case of leopard straying in the colony. He also expressed fear that the animal may return. Sub-divisional officer K C Verma who led the rescue operation told TOI, “The leopard is believed to have taken refuge in a vacant plot in the vicinity which has thick bushes. We have put up a cage and it is likely to get trapped.” He also added that forest staff lacked tranquilizing guns. What are your views? Let us know in the comments below.
