Every year, the first Monday of May is the most awaited day for the fashion aficionados across the world. It’s the day when a few selected celebrities gather to celebrate fashion and raise funds at The Metropolitan Museum of Arts Gala. The event is taking place this year on May 6, Monday. All eyes are on the red carpet of Met Gala 2019 as some of the biggest fashionistas across the globe will be putting their best fashion foot forward. In attendance will be Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas, Deepika Padukone, Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce Knowles, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry among other internationally recognised names.
Before the event begins today, here are some interesting facts about Met Gala that one should know. Check these out:
Why does the Met Gala happen on the first Monday of May?
Met Gala didn’t always take place on the first Monday of May. It was only in the year 2005 that the organisers decided to schedule it for first May-Monday. From 2001 to 2004, it used to be held in late April. Before that, it was regarded as the most significant winter exhibition for the fall collection of designers. In 2005, the event gave tribute to French fashion house Chanel and since then, the fundraiser is happening every year on the first Monday of May.
There’s a ticket for the guests
While the members of the Benefit Committee, a few selected designers and their guests don’t have to pay to attend the event, the others pay a hefty amount to buy the ticket. Some of the celebrities who are seen walking the red carpet at Met Gala buy a solo ticket worth $30,000 and if they want to have a table, they spend $275,000.
There’s a waiting list of the guests. This means that there is a possibility for a guest to be preparing for his/ her appearance at the big evening and then ultimately not being able to live the dream of attending the fancy event. In other words, celebrities who have applied for their presence at the event are expected to get their look ready in advance irrespective of the possibility of not really being there on the day.
It was only last year that the organisers decided to not allow guests below 18-years of age at Met Gala. It was unanimously decided that the event is ‘not appropriate’ for the people below 18. However, if one is accompanied by parents, the new rule could be overlooked.
No phones and social media
The guests attending Met Gala are not allowed to use their phones or click any selfies at the event. Social media has been banned at the fundraiser event. As reported by Page Six, the information to the guests on an official invite reads, “The use of phones for photography and social media will not be permitted inside the gala.”
