The biggest goof-up of the year is here and this is going to be doing the rounds for eons to come. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as the Best Picture Award winner instead of Moonlight in a dramatic goof-up. Moonlight won the award sensationally defeating the strong favourite La La Land. Faye Dunaway read out La La Land as the winner and the cast and crew took to centre stage where they gave their acceptance speech. Chaos then reigned as Warren Beatty who had announced the winner along with Faye Dunaway came on stage to admit their mistake. “I wasn’t trying to be funny,” said Beatty, explaining that they had been handed the previous winner’s envelope – for Emma Stone’s La La Land victory. “That’s why I looked at Faye for a really long time,” said Beatty.

Directed by Barry Jenkins, Moonlight won over critics decisions in many categories. La La Land which was one of the favourites to win for Best Picture won in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role for Emma Stone and Best Director for Damien Chazelle at the 89th Academy Awards. Jimmy Kimmel took to the stage to dissipate the awkwardness and tension that ensued. Apparently Faye Dunaway was given the previous category’s envelope which read – Emma Stone, La La Land. So in all fairness Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway felt that La La Land is the inevitable winner since it was the frontrunner for the award. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway’s mistake comes on the heels of Steve Harvey’s epic goof-up of Miss Universe 2015 where he announced Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutiérrez as the winner instead of Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. The Academy Awards Twitter handle was also caught off guard when it tweeted the wrong name but hastily deleted the tweet. However, the deed was done as nothing escapes from the Twitterati. Viola Davis just became the first Black woman to win an Oscar, Emmy and a Tony Award

Twitter was in splits after the goof-up. Sample some of the tweets below:
