The inhumane attack on director Sanjay Leela Bhansali by the political organisation Karni Sena has stirred a debate on making historical films. While the entire film industry condemned the horrific incident and spoke out for creative freedom, there have been other famous personalities who shared a different opinion. The latest celebrity to join the Padmavati debate is Olympic medal winning Indian wrestler, Yogeshwar Dutt. The bronze medal winning freestyle wrestler took to Twitter to share his thoughts on this much-discussed subject.

The Indian fighter went on a Twitter rant and shared the achievements of original Rani Padmavati, who is the basis for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film. The wrestler warned the filmmakers from tampering the story of the courageous queen of Chittorgarh, Rani Padmini or Padmavati. The four tweet long rant by the sportsperson gives a summary of Padmavati’s fight against Alauddin Khilji and the story of her self-immolation. Rani Padmavati of Chittorgarh in Indian history! Is Padmavati a work of fiction or real?

The first tweet by the Padmashree awardee was a call for India with the hashtag #HighTimeWakeUpIndia and translated to “The courage, sacrifice and pride of the queen of Chittor is immortal. The King of Chittor, Ratan Singh won her in a Swayamwar.”

The freestyle wrestler continued by saying, “taking inspiration from novels is different from taking inspiration from historical figures. There is a huge difference between Rani Padmavati and Paro from Devdas. Rani Padmavati is a symbol of courage and bravery, be very careful while telling her story.”

Dutt also shared a page from history by stating that Rani Padmavati fought for her honour against the merciless Sultan, Khilji and chose to fight for her honour along with 16000 warriors. Padmavati chose self-immolation protecting herself from Alauddin Khilji.

The last tweet in the series paid tribute to the martyrs of the battle against Khilji and spoke about the young boys above the age of 12, who courageously fought the losing battle, and ended his thoughts by stating that any tampering of facts in their story will not be tolerated.

The debate of misrepresentation of facts in Padmavati began after the political organisation Karni Sena, assaulted director Sanjay Leela Bhansali based on rumours that there is a romantic scene between Ranveer Singh who plays the role of Alauddin Khilji and Deepika Padukone, who is Rani Padmavati. The debate has taken a heated turn as various people are questioning the story of Padmavati, with many calling Padmavati a tale of fiction, while others proudly retell the stories of their cultural history.
