Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Kashmir Valley today to flag off the Udhampur- Katra rail link. This will be Modi’s first visit to Kashmir after becoming the Prime Minister. After prolonged wait now pilgrims will be able to directly reach Katra and access the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine by rail. An estimated 10 million devotees visit the shrine every year. The 25 kilometer long Udhampur- Katra rail link has been built at an estimated cost of 1, 132.75 crore.
PM Modi will flag off the first train from the station in Trikuta Hills in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will be at the venue in Katra for the train flag off.
PM visited Kashmir in the midst of a shutdown called by separatists and warnings by Muslim groups not to create a separate airspace for Kashmiri Pandits including leader like Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Shabir Ahmad Shah.
Modi will also inaugurate a 240 MW hydro power in the border town of Uri Baramulla district.
