Spanish tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, the current World No.1, was beaten by a virtually unknown teenager Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon 2014. The Australian Kyrgios is ranked at world No.144. It was an interesting match on the Centre Court at Wimbledon on Tuesday, July 2, when world champion Nadal struggled against the surprise attack by the newcomer.
Kyrgios beat Nadal 7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3 at Wimbledon.
Steffi Graf, former Ladies’ Singles world No.1, shared her views on Facebook after the Nadal vs Kyrgios match, saying, “What outstanding tennis from Center Court at Wimbledon today! First, great victory for Angelique Kerber winning against Maria Sharapova in one of the best matches of the tournament so far. Kerber needing her 7th match point to close it out, becomes the second German to make it to the Quarterfinals along with Lisicki. The biggest upset in the men’s draw came today as 19-year old Australian Nick Kyrgios, who only turned professional last year, beat Rafa Nadal. Kyrgios’ phenomenal display of serving and aggressive, fearless play from the baseline earned him a well-deserved victory against the world’s No. 2. He certainly showed today that he can play on the biggest stage with the best players. As far as I’m concerned the future for Australian tennis looks very promising. It was pleasure to watch.”
