Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda made announcements about a line of new measures for the Railways including the much hyped bullet train, passenger’s safety, amenities and new facilities in his maiden budget presentation in Lok Sabha, which was the most anticipated announcement.
The main target is to become largest freight carrier in the world. Even though the freight business has gone up steadily over the years the India railways’ carry 31% of the freight carried by all modes, so the railways has to shift focus to the freight. In 1950, 90% of the freight was carried by rail and now it has tumbled down. Also Diamond Quadrilateral of high-speed trains, and modern facilities were some of the highlights of Gowda’s Rail Budget.
He also spoke about last month’s fare hike by 14.2% and defended himself by saying that the fare had to be hiked for getting Railways back on the track and that it was the only progressive way to do so.
