Ram Prasad Bismil holds a very important place in the Indian history. He was an Indian revolutionary who participated in Mainpuri conspiracy of 1918, the Kakori conspiracy of 1925, and struggled against British imperialism. Today marks the 121st birth anniversary of the freedom fighter, who started taking part in the freedom movement at the young age of 11. Popularly known as Bismil, he was also a patriotic poet and wrote in Hindi and Urdu using the pen names Ram, Agyat, and Bismil.
Born on 11 June 1897 at Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Bismil was associated with Arya Samaj since childhood. Arya Samaj is the place where he got inspiration from Satyarth Prakash, a book written by Swami Dayanand Saraswati, and started working for India’s independence. The freedom fighter was one of the founding members of the revolutionary organisation Hindustan Republican Association.

Ram Prasad Bismil executed a meticulous plan for looting the government treasury carried in a train at Kakori, UP. Known as Kakori conspiracy, the historical event took place on 9 August 1925. Apart from Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Roshan Singh and Rajendra Nath Lahiri were also arrested by the British. Following 18 months of legal process, all the three accused were sentenced to death. Bismil was hanged on 19 December 1927 at Gorakhpur Jail.
