March 23 is observed as Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) in India to honour the great freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram  Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, who were hanged by the British Raj for their alleged involvement in the killing of John Saunders. The trio mistook Saunders to be JA Scott, a police officer who was believed to have struck Lala Lajpat Rai during a lathi charge in October 1928.

Social media is flooded with messages of patriotism and ‘Shaheed Diwas’, ‘Bhagat Singh’ and ‘Sukhdev’ emerged as top trends on Twitter. One of the tweets read, “#RememberingOurRealHeros Exactly 88 years ago #OnThisDay three young freedom fighters split their blood to save ours ! The sacrifices will always be remembered. Salute to Shaheed #BhagatSingh, #Rajguru & #Sukhdev on the day of their martyrdom. #ShaheedDivas”. #शहीददिवस ”
