In a rather bizarre case, eight players of Iran’s women’s soccer team have been found to be either men or transgender. Ana Kasparian and Ben Mankiewicz of The Young Turks discuss this case, saying that since gender reassignment is common in Iran and not a taboo in spite of the traditional set-up, many of these women might have been born as men. That also brings up the topic of transgender athletes.
Mojtabi Sharifi, a source close to the Iranian league told the Iranian Young Journalists Club website that these players have been with Iran’s female team without completing their sex change operation.
The news channel Al Arabiya reported the case on its website first. But in 2014 itself, a similar case was reported by the UK’s newspaper The Telegraph about four footballers from Iran’s national women’s team being men.
