Today, Sonu Nigam declared his decision of deleting his Twitter account bidding adieu to his almost 7 million fans and followers after fellow playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya‘s profile was suspended. On April 17 2017, Sonu Nigam had tweeted how using loudspeakers in the name of religion is not right for a civilized society and had stressed the point that even though he is not a Muslim he is woken up every day early morning with the sound of azaan. He had called it forced religiousness and had even highlighted the fact that no temple or gurudwara does the same that too during the hours which the court has directed not to use any loudspeakers. He even appeared on National TV to clarify his views stating that he is not against any religion but is against loudspeakers that hamper the peace and quiet of a neighbourhood.

Sonu Nigam’s comments at that point had created a furore and he was trolled on Twitter by people who clearly did not understand his argument. A fatwa was also issued against him by a West Bengal Maulvi who offered to pay anyone who shaved Sonu Nigam’s head Rs 10 lacs. Sonu Nigam in an act of defiance shaved his own head and demanded the promised amount. However, the Maulvi obviously shied away from paying up. Yesterday, when singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s twitter account was suspended for some controversial tweets on former JNU Vice-President Shehla Rashid, Sonu Nigam came to his support and asked that why does Twitter not suspend or permanently delete other common people’s accounts who threaten others on Twitter but why only celebrities are targeted? Aren’t celebrities also common citizens? Sonu Nigam had tweeted, “Really? They suspended his account? Why? 90% of Twitter accounts then should be suspended too for worse fanaticism, Foul language & Threats! Indians mistake Sonu Sood for Sonu Nigam right after Snapdeal and Snapchat fiasco!

Sonu Nigam today in a series of tweets announced that he is deleting his Twitter account. He wrote, “I bid adieu to Twitter and my close to 7 Million followers today, leaving most Disappointed and angry at me, and some Sadists Happy. I have come to understand that “You can wake up someone who’s sleeping, but can not wake up one who’s pretending to sleep when he’s awake.”

However, he always maintained that his views were not against any religion and was targeted at the unlawful use of loudspeakers during the prohibited time. Even today, when he has announced that he will be deleting his Twitter account he has stressed the fact that we have stopped being humans, we are nothing but proud Hindus, Muslims, Pakistanis, Indians and arrogantly stupid. He said goodbye to his 6.5 million fans and said that if there is any other platform which will have a filter then he would own that. Hopefully, there would be one and we will have access to Sonu Nigam once more!
