Arguably Bollywood’s first female superstar and one of the most iconic actress, Sridevi, passed away on Saturday (February 24). Most of India woke up to the sad news of her demise. The legendary actress was in Dubai to attend the wedding of Mohit Marwah. The sudden demise of the beloved superstar shocked many, who then took to Twitter and Facebook to express their grief. Not just fans. but also celebrities expressed their feelings and memories related to Sridevi on Twitter. It was reported that the actress died of a cardiac arrest. Many found this surprising, as Sridevi had no history of heart ailments in the past. But the post-mortem reports have revealed that the death was due to ‘accidental drowning’. Now this, as Simi Garewal pointed out, bears an uncanny resemblance to Whitney Houston’s death.
Forensic reports released by the Dubai authorities state that the cause of death was ‘accidental drowning’ and not ‘cardiac arrest’, for Sridevi. It was reported that traces of alcohol were found in her blood. Sridevi was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when she lost balance and fell into the bathtub of her hotel room at Jumeirah Emirate Towers. She had drowned in the hotel bathtub after losing consciousness. And if we go back to the year 2012, Whitney Houston had died in a similar way. On February 11, 2012, Whitney was found dead, face-down in a water-filled bathtub. It was reported that Whitney had checked in to the Beverly Hilton hotel with her friends and family to attend the Grammys. Clive Davis, Whitney’s assistant, had laid out a dress on the bed for the singer and left the room. When she returned, she found Houston face-down in the bathtub.
Here is Simi Garewal’s tweet pointing out the eerie similarity:
“The Dubai Police has transferred the case to the Dubai Public Prosecution, which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases,” the government of Dubai media office tweeted. Sridevi is survived by her husband, Boney Kapoor, and daughters Jhanvi and Khushi. Her daughter, Jhanvi, will be making her Bollywood debut this year opposite Ishan Khattar in Dhadak, the Hindi remake of the Marathi superhit film Sairat.
