Here is s video by The Indian Express in which Ritu Sarin, Executive Editor, News and Investigation, explains the research that went into her excellent expose and how they managed to get access to such sensitive details. The video also clarifies why the list is named ‘Swiss Leaks’. This is a list of over 1,00,000 HSBC clients worldwide with details of their account in Geneva.
“It involved lot of research for over three moths to verify names and addresses mentioned in the list. It also included lots of translation, as the account opening statement between bankers and clients were in French,” says Sarin.
According to The Indian Express, it got hold of the list of names with the help of French newspaper Le Monde whose journalist got it from the French government. The joint operation by ICIJ had 140 journalists from 45 countries and included reporters from the BBC and The Guardian, among others. All the newspapers decided to publish the story on February 9.
