The year 1991 was when liberalisation took place in India, when markets were opened up by the then Finance Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Unfortunately, it was also when India’s much loved prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. The nineties were also when an Indian won the Miss Universe pageant for the first time – Sushmita Sen – in 1994. The same year, Aishwarya Rai won the Miss World pageant. The 1990s was also the decade of cricketing triumphs and technological leaps for India, as also many important Bollywood movies like Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!!, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Rangeela, if to quote some from Hindi cinema.
Sadly, the nineties are also remembered for the Kargil War (1999), which happened at the same time as the Cricket World Cup 1999. National Geographic wants to relive these memories on their special show The ’90s – India Rediscovered that starts on June 12. Catch the promo here. (Photo: Filmibeat)
