Tubelight, the much-awaited film of 2017 starring Salman Khan released on June 23. But the successful actor-director pair of Salman and Kabir Khan plus the occasion of Eid has not worked in favour of Tubelight as it’s opening day box office collection were revealed. In contrary to the box office predictions before the release of Tubelight, the war-drama has collected a sum of Rs 21.15 crore on its first day. This figure is almost half of Salman Khan’s highest recorded first-day box office collection movie – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, which stands tall at Rs 40.35 crore. Tubelight, on the other hand, is his 7th highest grossing film on the first day in domestic box office. The list of all-time opening day figures is still held by Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 2014 heist drama film, Happy New Year with 44.95 crores.

Over the years, Salman Khan has been weaving magic on the occasion of Eid. And in the company of talented filmmaker Kabir Khan, the excitement only doubles up. The brilliant duo gave the audiences exciting and moving films, Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. But their recent collaboration, Tubelight, a heart-wrenching drama set in the backdrop of Indo-China 1962 war fails to live up to the hype of a Salman Khan movie. The film collected 21.15 crore on its first day of release, which is a significant number for any actor in the industry but a lull figure when comparing it to Salman’s previous movies.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the official figures of Tubelight’s opening day collection, and it was a Rs 21.15 crore, a paltry figure compared to Salman Khan’s other recent releases. His 2015 family-drama Prem Ratan Dhan Payo directed by Sooraj Barjatya minted Rs 40.35 crore. Tubelight which was expected to give tough competition to this year’s biggest release, Bahubali 2, a Telugu film dubbed in Hindi is nowhere near to it. The Hindi version of SS Rajamouli-directed Baahubali 2: The Conclusion collected Rs 41 crore, and grabbed the place of the second position in all-time opening day collection record.

Forget about Tubelight’s competition with other movies; the latest Salman Khan release has failed to outshine star’s earlier films. Tubelight is placed at seventh spot in superstar actor’s highest first-day collection list, just above his 2012 film Dabangg 2 by mere five lakhs. His 2014 film Jai Ho, which collected Rs 17.75 crore ranks ninth in this list of top-10 opening day collections. Jai Ho which was directed by Salman Khan’s actor brother Sohail Khan was his last average grosser film and looks like Tubelight might be another Salman-Sohail collaboration which will prove to be a cold turkey. In Tubelight, Sohail is not directing but acting (common link – box office business remains cold).

While Tubelight has certainly failed to light up on the first day, the worrying factor for the filmmakers and producers is the zero growth it has shown on the second day. It saw a negligible boost of two lakhs with Day Two’s collection on Saturday reading Rs 21.17 crore taking the film’s total to Rs 42.32 crore. Tubelight starred Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, child artist from Arunachal Pradesh, Matin Rey Tangu and late actor Om Puri in pivotal roles apart from real-life Khan brothers. The film was panned by critics for its thin screenplay and slow pace but what is hurting the film most is the negative word of mouth from Salman Khan die-hard fans who feel cheated and disappointed.
