Audi has not kept it a big secret about wanting to become the world's largest luxury carmaker by 2018. And in this endeavor, the German automaker knows that they need to bring in a completely fresh line-up of new cars and had also recently promised introduction of no fewer than 18 new models or improvements on the current models by the end of this year.
Now according to reports coming out of Europe, Audi has filed paperwork with the European trademark office to protect seven new car names – Q6, Q8, R6, S2, S9, RS1 and RS8. Furthermore, Audi has also trademarked, 'e-gasoline,' 'e-diesel', and 'e-benzin' names, which will be used in their green car department.
While, the Q6 is already known to exist will challenge the BMW X6 crossover, the Q8 will be positioned as the largest luxury SUV in Audi'a range.
The R6 is likely a variant of the Audi's mid-engine supercar, the R8 that will probably ride on a smaller platform and be slightly more affordable.
The name S2 and S9 suggest that Audi will is about to introduce two new models, the A2 and A9 with the S2 and S9 being the sports version of the aforementioned cars. Rumors of a new model above the current flagship A8 are already doing its rounds. The RS1 badge could be reserved for a slightly detuned version of the limited edition A1 Quattro.
We are not completely certain on how many of these new names will materialize with a four rings badge and on to a production version model. But it seems like Audi is making sure they don't bump into any legal issues, if they decide to build them.
