BMW i8 Launched in India: BMW prices i8 Hybrid Supercar at INR 2.29 Crore
BMW India today launched its hybrid Supercar BMW i8 at the premium price of INR 2.29 crore. The car is the first i-series to be launched in India and marks the entry of into the uber-niche market of hybrid supercars in our country. The BMW i8 has entered the Indian market via CBU (completely built unit) route and will be sold in very limited numbers, mainly because of its increasing global demand, which evidently BMW is not able to fully meet.
On the design front the BMW i8 is extremely futuristic thanks to the carbonfibre body combined with a set of butterfly doors, which truly augments its plug-in hybrid persona. What truly gives it an exemplary stance is, its low slung coupe-like structure, draped in the silver shade with blue accents. With aggressive design elements and tastefully crafted body the BMW i8 looks slick and holds an attention grabbing guise. The design of the BMW i8 is appreciated to such a level that, in some countries the demand for the i8 far exceeds that for its Italian rivals Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Coming back to its core nature, the BMW i8 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. While the engine efficiently produces 231PS of power and 320Nm of torque, the electric motor adds another 131PS and 250Nm to the i8 giving it a combined output of 362PS and 570Nm. The German carmaker claims that the i8 can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 4.4 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 250 kmph. Moreover despite a large battery pack and a powerful engine, the car weighs just 1490kg, and it has a very low centre of gravity, thanks to is carbonfibre body.
As for what this car truly stands for, the BMW i8 emits only 59g/km of CO2 according as per it maker. The plug-in hybrid has a range of 37km in pure electric mode and can go up to a top speed of 120kmph before the petrol engine kicks in and takes care of the rest. The i8 is a mid-engined Supercar with its rear wheels driven by a petrol engine and the front driven by an electric motor, is said to have an almost exact 50:50 weight distribution so expect it to handle like on rails.
