Exterior and Design:
As mentioned earlier the Hyundai i20 Active has been designed based on the carmaker’s best selling hatchback the Elite i20. So basically it carries the same persona of its hatchback counterpart but with a taller stance and more aggressive features. To attain that crossover look designer at Hyundai have added some heavy body cladding, protective skid plates and a meaner looking front bumper with bull bar going over the air dam. Unlike the elite i20’s honeycomb grille pattern, the i20 Active gets a new reverse shaped grille with horizontal lines. Hyundai has redesigned the fog lamps and now instead of the old trapezoidal design you get rounded ones with cornering function. It is a steering wheel based function that turns the right driving lamp lights up when you turn right, similarly the left one lights up when you turn left (this is activated only when you switch on the headlamps).
As for some aesthetic additions the new i20 Active get LED daytime running lamps along with the projectors. Other exterior features include satin-finish roof rail, satin-finish fuel cover and a new body colour scheme that differentiate the i20 Active from the Elite i20. Typical to its cross-styled rivals, the i20 Active too gets matte black cladding that underscores the bumpers and the side skirts. Even the rear end has been slightly redesigned with the addition of new round reflectors and faux aluminium skid plate.
Interiors and Features:
Inside, the Hyundai i20 Active comes with considerable new changes compared to its hatchback counterpart. Though the dashboard design has been carried forward, it still gets a differentiating touch thanks to the new colour accents. The interiors come with dual tone black and orange upholstery, colour coded gear knob, chilled glove box and sporty new pedals. To top it all the AC vents of the i20 Active gets an attractive brown bezel around them. These patterns will be only available in the brown and red option. In the silver car you get cool dual tone blue and black shades on the dashboard, the doors and the seats.
In terms of space and comfort the car very much similar to the Elite i20, which is the good thing considering the fact that the Elite i20 offers you best in the class interior features. As for the equipments you get everything there is you can find in the top of the line Elite i20. Exclusive features, like keyless entry, start/stop system, multifunctional steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, a stereo with 1 GB internal memory, digital climate control and a reversing camera. It also gets automatic lights, ABS and air bags.
Engine and Fuel Efficiency:
As for the powertrain there are no considerable changes except for some slight tuning that Hyundai claims to have applied on both the engines. The petrol variant of the new i20 Active is powered by the same 1.2-litre kappa, four cylinder VTVT engine that produces 83PS of power and 114Nm peek torque. Transmission duties are carried out by a 5-speed manual gearbox. Even the diesel variant comes with the same 1.4-litre diesel motor churning out 90PS power and 220Nm of peek torque, while mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
The new Hyundai i20 Active continues to be easy on the pocket like the Elite by offering reasonable fuel efficiency. While the diesel does come with an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 21.19kmpl, the petrol variant offers you a fuel efficiency of over 17kmpl.
