Just before the end of the first hour, Casey Stoner, who had qualified the Mustachio Harc Pro Honda third on the grid, took over from Takumi Takahashi. Casey Stoner has suffered arm and leg injuries after being involved in a heavy accident when his throttle stuck open.

It was Stoner’s first appearance in the endurance classic and his first serious motorcycle race since his retirement from MotoGP. Taking part in his first motorcycle race since Valencia 2012, disaster struck for Stoner on the fast, curving, downhill approach to the hairpin. After a front-end wobble, Stoner ran onto the grass where he fell from his CBR1000RR – sending rider and bike somersaulting.
