Mercedes Benz used the 2013 New York Motor Show as a platform to officially showcase its B-class Electric Drive in its final, production-ready trim. The model shown at NY bears a different design for its alloy wheels, a slick blue paint job and a new front bumper as compared to the regular B-class.
The electrically propelled hatchback will have a driving range of up to 200 km and a full-charge time of 2 hours. Powering the car is an electric motor that draws energy from a lithium-ion battery and produces 134 PS of power and 310 Nm of turning force. The setup can manage a 0-96 km/h sprint in a whisker under 10s and can attain a restricted top speed of 160 km/h.
The battery pack is stored in the vehicle’s floor, thus saving space and also complying to safety standards in case of an impact. Therefore the safety levels and cabin / luggage space of the B-class Electric Drive are similar to the ones offered by the conventional B-class hatchback.
The B-class Electric Drive will also have a feature called the ‘Vehicle Homepage’ which allows owners to hook up to their car through the internet via a smartphone or a computing device and monitor the battery status and range and also allows them to pre-heat or cool the cabin in time for their drive!
Sounds pretty cool, but considering the infrastructure in India, we are sure that the B-class Electric Drive won’t make it to our shores in the recent future. The United States and the European market however, will get the B-class EV from 2014.
