The 2017 North America auto show started off on 8 January, and the second day of the international automotive event saw the unveiling of the much-awaited facelift of the Mercedes-Benz GLA compact premium SUV. The GLA facelift was teased earlier in January and marks the mid-life facelift for the GLA class, which was first unveiled in 2013 at the Shanghai auto show as a concept. The production version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA was later seen in the Frankfurt auto show, and the compact crossover SUV began selling from the model year 2014 onwards. Assembled in Germany, India and Thailand, the Mercedes-Benz GLA was designed as a rival to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, and is positioned within the Mercedes stable under the top-end GLC. The SUV shares the same platform as the A-Class and B-Class compact cars from Mercedes-Benz.

Given that this is a facelift, the Mercedes-Benz GLA continues with the same platform as before, retaining the same overall styling and shape, especially at the rear. The front gets the most changes externally, with updated front bumpers and a new grille with chain-link chrome. Straddling the new grille are LED headlights replacing the older bi-xenon units. The new Mercedes-Benz GLA facelift also gets a 30 mm higher ground clearance. Inside, little has changed from the older GLA to the 2017 facelift. There is a new 8-inch infotainment system, and chrome elements have been added. There are also some changes to the instrument cluster and the upholstery has been revised. In addition, the performance-tuned Mercedes-AMG GLA45 model was also revealed with the 4MATIC four-wheel drive system and small changes to its look. The vehicle continues with the same turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that delivers 371 bhp of power and 474 Nm of torque. It gets shorter gear ratios for improve acceleration and hits the 100 kmph mark from standstill in 4.4 seconds. The vehicle gets a 250 kmph electronically limited top speed.
