In an Interview with Autocar, Michael Perschke, MD, Audi India, has confirmed the entry of Audi’s smallest saloon to India. Unveiled in the Geneva motor show earlier this year, The A3 is essentially a small family car, and the sedan version was showcased in Geneva. Built on the same platform as the VW Golf, the A3 sedan follows the current design language with single frame grill and A6-ish headlamps. Its length is 188mm which is smaller then the VW Jetta and 260mm shorter than the A4, the A3 when launched in India will go up against BMW’s 1 series which is also expected to reach India's shores soon. Although a 2.5-litre turbocharged 408PS engine was showcased in at the A3 at the Geneva Motor Show, more frugal engine options will be coming to India.
What can be expected from the A3? Apart from the sleek exteriors, best-in-class interiors will make it a benchmark in that price range. However, be prepared to sacrifice interior space for that style – the Jetta, Laura and the A3 are all built on the same platform and are roughly the same exterior dimensions, but the Audi will have the most style and least interior space. The Audi A3 is expected to be launched in 2013 after the launch of the Q3 in 2012. Pricing just as we mentioned earlier, will be somewhere between Rs 20-25 lakh.
