Bajaj RE60 spotted again; Likely to roll-out in Gujarat, Karnataka first

The Bajaj RE60 made its debut at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi last year however; the ‘quadricycle’ as it is now called, is yet to hit the roads as the government is currently undergoing the process of regulating various norms for the vehicle.

While Bajaj is all-set with the production process, the company also awaits a final approval from the government to commercially roll out the vehicle even as carmakers continue to stand against its launch. In fact, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors have been against the launch of quadricycles owing to concerns regarding safety and emissions.

Depending on the government’s final call, Bajaj may have to carry out a few major or minor modifications to the RE60.

Unveiled last year at the Auto Expo, the RE60 aims to set new standards in the commercial vehicle segment when it comes to fuel economy and emissions. In spite of such compact dimensions, the RE60’s upright silhouette allows for a generous amount of room inside the cabin. The interior, much like the Tata Nano, is quite basic; the instrument cluster sits in the middle with a dash-mounted gear lever and storage bins on either side.

The RE60 is powered by a 200cc liquid-cooled, petrol engine. This single-cylinder engine churns out around 20PS of power. While the output sounds very little, the engine in fact doesn’t have to carry around much weight as the RE60 is said to weigh well under 500kg. The top-speed is said to have been limited to 70kmph in interest of safety.

Bajaj plans to launch the RE60 in states such as Karnataka and Gujarat that do not have a permit cap for passenger carriers. Additionally, the RE60 will also cater to small cities with an underdeveloped transport system.
