The BMW 5-Series has been one of the most important marquees for BMW ever since its debut in 1972. Now, 45 years later, the mid-size luxury sedan is set to enter its seventh generation, designated G30. This will replace the outgoing F10 generation that ran from 2010 to 2016, marking a major step forward for the 5-Series and a car that many will be waiting for when it arrives on Indian shores in late 2017. But here s some interesting news: the new 2017 BMW 5-Series is already in India. Two units of the executive car, the 520d and 530d, were imported into India in September 2016. Testing seems to be underway with the G30 generation too, with a heavily camouflaged 2017 5-Series seen strapped onto a flatbed truck. Taken near Pune, these new photos of the upcoming 5-Series do not reveal many details about the car itself apart from what we already know. But they do suggest that the luxury car is well on its way to launching in India.
The new 5-Series is set to be more comfortable and refined to drive, with a better cabin build, list of equipment and features and a more relaxed passenger experience. Early reviews suggest that the car is not has performance-oriented as the 3-Series or the fifth-generation E60, but can turn agile and deliver a fun driving experience with the Sport mode. It was unveiled in October 2016, at the start of the final quarter of the year. Grabbing design elements from the previous-generation F10 models and the higher-end BMW 7-Series, the new G30 5-Series is longer by 36 mm, a little wider by 6 mm and just a smidge taller at 2 mm. The wheelbase has been expanded by 7 mm to 2,975 mm. Also Read: BMW X3 xDrive28i and X5 xDrive35i launched in India

The 2017 BMW 5-Series will utilise the OKL Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform from BMW, which is supposedly around 100 kg lighter than the previous generation. It also gets new features like the latest BMW iDrive system with a massive 10.25-inch touch-screen and a heads-up display, rear seats with a massage function, Intelligent Voice Assist and wireless charging. It gets semi-autonomous technologies like an optional Active Cruise Control, crossing traffic warning and active side collision protection.

For the power-train, the BMW 5-Series in India will likely come in three variants: the 530i, 530d and 520d. An M-Sport variant may be added later on. The 520d will get a 2.0-litre, B47 turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that will deliver 187 bhp of power, while the 530d will get a 3.0-litre B57 turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine delivering 261 bhp. Then there will be the 530i, which gets a 3.0-litre, quad-turbo six-cylinder engine that will deliver 249 bhp. The spied 5-Series model featured alloy wheels, suggesting that the 5-Series will be introduced with the M-Sport variant in India like the larger and higher-end 7-Series. Speaking of the 7-Series, the upcoming BMW 5-Series gets a lot of design elements from its bigger sibling. This is evident right from the front, where the headlights of the new-generation G30 are now fused with the grille like the 7-Series. The front also gets a sportier and more aggressive bumper. The arches around the front wheels also get vents at their rear like the 7-Series, along with more muscular sides and distinctive taillights. Despite the longer wheelbase and overall length, the car is more compact and sportier thanks to its taut and muscular styling.
