BMW reveals Mercedes CLS, Audi A7 competitor

BMW has been a little late getting to the four-door coupe party, but it is finally here with the 6-series Gran Coupe, which is based on the 6-series coupe. It adds about 112mm to the length, most of which has gone into space for the rear seat.

The first version to be launched in the US market will be the 640i, with a turbocharged inline six-cylinder 3.0-litre petrol powerplant producing 315PS and an astonishing 447Nm. Later on the 650i will be launched with the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 generating 445PS and 651Nm of torque – this is the one to go for if you want to get to 100kmph in 4.6 seconds, shaming more than a few supercars along the way. Both will possess ZF's eight-speed transmission.

How BMW distinguises itself from the likes of the competition like the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Audi A7 and even the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide is that it claims to be a 4+1 seater. Does it have a special enough look? We think not. But not to worry, BMW fans – there's an M version coming, by the looks of it. Expect the first 6-series Gran Coupes to go on sale in 2013.
