General Motors India have rolled out its 2013 Chevrolet Sail sedan in the Indian market today at an introductory price of Rs 4.99 lakh for the base petrol variant and Rs 6.29 lakh for the base diesel variant. (Both prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi.)
Jointley developed by General Motors and its Chinese partner SAIC, the Chevrolet Sail is literally a boot-on-hatch version of the Sail U-VA that was launched in November 2012 at a starting price of Rs 4.44 lakhs; hence conforming with the successful strategy, which automakers have been following in India ever since the Indigo CS – the car that started the whole sub-4 meter game and eventually led to the birth of the Mahindra Verito, Toyota Etios, Swift DZire and the upcoming Honda Amaze.
Coming back to the Sail sedan, the model will be offered in both petrol and diesel variants with four trim levels each, which include Base, LS, LS ABS and LT ABS. The petrol variant is being powered by a 1..2-litre, 4-cylinder unit that churns out 86 PS of max power and 113 Nm of peak torque. The diesel variants are being powered by a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder unit that produces 78 PS of max power and 205 Nm of peak torque. The top-end variants have ANS as standard.
On the inside, General Motors claim that Sail sedan has one the largest boot in the country with a capacity of 370 litre. The suspension of the car has been tuned for the Indian road conditions, while maintaining sharp driving dynamics, claims Chevrolet.
