Like Fiats other products the Jeep 554 SUV will be manufactured in collaboration with Tata Motors at their Ranjangaon plant near Pune. The facility will also be manufacturing Tata’s upcoming SUVs Q501 and Q502 along with Jeep 554 SUV. All the three SUVs will be powered by Fiat’s 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine, which will be locally manufactured by Tata Motors and Fiat. The locally manufactured engine will be beneficial for both carmakers to come up with aggressive pricing strategy for their upcoming SUVs. Thus the production of this diesel engine makes this joint venture extremely important for both the auto manufacturers.
The 554 compact SUV will most likely be designed in the lines of Jeep’s current outgoing models in the international market. The SUV is expected to get a 4-wheel drive right from the launch and considering the fact that some of the major components of the SUV will be manufactured in the country, it will be the most affordable Jeep to be sold in India. The Jeep 554 SUV will share its underpinnings with Jeep Renegade and when launched will be going up against Hyundai ix25, Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Maruti S-Cross and the likes in the segment.
The 2.0-litre Multijet already powers Fiat cars like the recently unveiled Cherokee in the overseas market. Currently it comes in two variants, the 9-speed automatic belting out 170 PS and the 6-speed manual generating 140 PS, the torque output is 350 Nm.
