Not many cars are as iconic as the Morris Oxford based Hindustan Motors Ambassador and given how strong the car's connection with India is, we can't do anything but feel bad about the present day scenario. It's not like the past anymore, today you have much better products, being offered at competitive prices. As a consequence, the sales of HM Ambassador failed to reach great heights. But Hindustan Motors is not giving up yet.

HM Ambassador hatchback to roll out in 2014

In an interview with Business Standard, HM's MD Uttam Bose has confirmed that the car maker has started working on the hatchback version of Ambassador. It will be made under the same name but will be much more modern than the current car. The report suggests that apart from the new-age hatchback, there's a BS-IV complaint diesel version of the Ambassador waiting to be launched this June. Also in the making is a sub 4-meter variant of the car, which will find its way to the market sometime later this year. If things go as planned, the hatchback will be out in 2014.

The new hatchback will be manufactured alongside the other versions of the car at HM's Uttarpara plant only. The plant has a capacity of producing 25,000 units a year but at present they utilize only 40% of it. We hope HM does its homework and gives us a product that not only looks great in isolation but also stands neck to neck with the competition.
