Honda WR-V becomes the fifth best selling UV in India; Honda to increase production

Honda Car India plans to ramp up the production of the WR-V to 5,000 units a month from the current 3,400 units to bring down the existing 2 month long waiting period ahead of the approaching festive season.

The Honda WR-V, the Japanese automaker’s first sub-compact SUV/crossover, based out of it’s Jazz premium hatchback has now become the fifth best selling UV in India. For the month of June 2017, Honda sold 4243 units of the WR-V; for Q1 2017, it sold a total of 12,550 units in the UV segment, taking its share up from 3.84 percent in April-June 2016 to 6.60 percent in April-June 2017. The demand for the WR-V is such that currently, the waiting period of this compact crossover stands in excess of two months. According to recent media reports, it is to be believed that Honda Car India is to increase the production of the WR-V in order to met the demand. Honda has received a total of 23,000 bookings for the WR-V so far. With a monthly production of 3,400 units, the automaker has till now met with only 16,000 of them. The company plans to take up the monthly production numbers for the WR-V up to 5,000. This will help Honda streamline the deliveries of the vehicle ahead of the approaching festive season where we see a jump in the sales of cars. The UV segment in India, which now include products from almost each and every automobile manufacturer in India, has been observing an year on year growth till the financial year 2017 and is to climb up further in the days to come. Currently, at the top of the list is the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (8293 units), closely followed by the Hyundai Creta (6436 units), with the Mahindra Bolero in third (5320 units) and Maruti Ertiga in the fourth place (4895 units).

Coming back to the Honda WR-V, this Jazz based sub-compact SUV/Crossover is manufactured locally in India at the automaker’s Tapukara plant. The WR-V gets a much more rugged and daunting exterior profile as against the Honda Jazz, unlike other hatchback based crossovers. Primarily competing against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300, the Honda WR-V is made available in both petrol and diesel guises. The engines have been carried forward from the Honda Jazz. The petrol derivative gets a 1.2-litre, i-VTEC engine which is capable of churning out 88Bhp along with 109Nm of peak torque. The diesel derivative on the other hand is plonked with a 1.5-litre i-DTEC motor, good for producing 98Bhp along with 200Nm of peak torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox in the petrol avatar and through a 6-speed manual gearbox in the diesel avatar. Prices fall in the range of INR 7.75 lakh going up to INR 9.99 lakh for the top-spec variant.
