Design and Exterior:
When it comes to looks and design unarguably the Creta is one of the best in its segment. The SUV has been designed based on Hyundai’s popular design philosophy – fluidic Sculpture 2.0 combining aesthetics looks, modern styling and a premium touch. The SUV has quite an aggressive appearance and an attention grabbing persona. The front is fashioned with bi-functional headlamps and LED foglamps combined with stylish three-slat chrome grille and wide airdam. The SUV also comes with sliver skid plate both at the front and the back along with black plastic cladding along the lower end of the vehicle adding to its SUV persona. But even with its stylish features and attractive design the Creta is quite homunculus in nature.
As opposed to Hyundai’s philosophy, Renault has taken a very subtle approach with the Duster, which though not as flashy as the Creta looks attractive in its own simple way. Even though the design is quite plain and simple, the Duster does offer all exterior features of an SUV like the muscular body tone, front and rear skid plates, black underbody cladding, roof rails, sporty alloy wheels and more.
Interiors and Features:
When we talk about the interiors if not the best Creta surely offers one of the best features in the segment. Having said that the one place where it falls back is in terms of cabin space. Apparently though the front driver and passenger seats are quite spacious and comfortable, the rear seat doesn’t have enough shoulder room to comfortably accommodate three adults. The boot space on the other hand is quite massive and can accommodate good amount of luggage.
In terms of features and equipments there is hardly anything to complaint about. The Hyundai Creta offers a 3-spoke multi-functional steering wheel with an infotainment system equipped with hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, audio video navigation, image and video display and an audio player. It also comes with leather covers on steering and gear knobs. Some additional features include keyless entry, start/stop button, fully-automated air conditioner, driver-side adjustable seats, reverse camera, rear AC vents, auto folding mirrors and more.
Renault Duster fails to match up to the Creta’s when we talk about feature offerings. That being said, the Duster does offer a little better cabin space and can comfortably seat 5 average sized adults. Rest ofcourse as we said the Duster comes with features like rear AC vents, power outlets, Navigation system, adjustable seats, Integrated 2DIN Audio, Bluetooth Connectivity, USB & Auxiliary input, Air Quality Control, leather seat covers, multiple cup holder and pockets, Cruise Control, Multi-function Steering Wheel, Touchscreen infotainment system and much more.
Safety features of the Creta include HIVE body structure, 6 airbags, Anti-lock breaking system (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce distribution (EBD),Hill start assist, parking assist, day/night rear-view mirror, impact sensing auto door unlock, lane change indicator, speed sensing auto door lock and engine immobilizer among others.
The safety features offered in the Duster includes ABS, centre locking, 2 airbags, Brake Assist, Crash Sensor, Side Impact Beams, Front Impact Beams, Day & Night Rear View Mirror, Height Adjustable Front Seat Belts, engine immobiliser and more.
Coming to the powerehouse, the automatic diesel variant of the Creta SX+ is powered by the SUVs flagship engine, a 1.6-litre oil burner. Capable to producing a maximum power output of 128 PS and a peak torque of 260 Nm, the engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox making it the first of its kind to do so. Apart from that the Creta also offers a smaller 90 PS 1.4-litre diesel variant and a 1.6-litre petrol variant, both mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Although the Creta does not offer 4WD (four wheel drive) option.
On the other hand the top-of-the-line diesel variant of the Duster comes in two diesel variants comes paired to a 1.5-litre oil burner the makes 110PS of maximum power and 248Nm of peak torque. The transmission duties car carried out by a 6-speed manual gearbox and comes in 4WD option making it the only compact SUV to do so. Additionally the Duster also comes in a less powerful 85 PS 1.5-litre diesel variant and a 1.6-litre K4M Petrol Engine, it makes 103.5 PS of power, both are mated to a 5-speed manual trasnission.
Price and Mileage:
Even with its exceptional feature offering the Hyundai Creta was largely criticised for being overpriced. With a starting price of INR 8.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) the Creta has the second highest base price in the segment making us really question Hyundai’s pricing strategy, especially when the car comes with 90-95% localization. The range-topping automatic diesel variant SX+ is offered at 13.57 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) making it costlier than the Duster 4WD. As for mileage the Creta offer an ARAI certified returns of 17.01 kmpl.
Compared to it the Duster 4WD diesel has been priced at INR 13.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) making it nearly INR 7000 cheaper than the Creta. The Duster even offers considerably more mileage with a ARAI certified figure of 19.72 kmpl.
The Creta is all about of style, features and power, where as the Duster is all about space, sensibility and affordability. Though the Creta is unarguably more powerful and attractive, it is the Duster that truly makes a smart choice in a market like India. In terms of performance both are at par with each other making them the best compact SUVs you can buy in the market. So coming back to the question as the which one of them is a smart buy, all we can say is that if it is ultimate power and style that you seek and you are not looking for an ideal family vehicle than the Creta is the one for you. But if you are not that into style and looks and seeking for space, mileage and a little better off-roading capability than the Duster is what you should choose. Personally my choice of compact SUV will be the Renault Duster.
