New generation Hyundai Verna 2017 certainly grabbed the eyes the day it was launched in the domestic market this year. With less than 6 months since its launch, the mid-sized sedan has bagged the most prestigious award which is considered as Oscar of Indian automotive awards – Indian Car Of The Year 2018. The sedan ruled out other 8 contenders shortlisted for ICOTY 2018 which included Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Honda WR-V, Renault Captur, Skoda Kodiaq, Tata Nexon, Jeep Compass, Volkswagen Tiguan and Maruti Suzuki Dzire. Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director, JK Tyre & Industries Limited on the behalf of the esteemed Jury of ICOTY 2018 handed the Indian Car of the Year trophy to Y.K. Koo, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. On the other hand, the Chairman of the ICOTY Jury, Bob Rupani presented a winners certificate to Hyundai which was signed by all Jury Members of ICOTY 2018. The other two finalists alongside Hyundai Verna that fought for the award were Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Jeep Compass. The ICOTY 2018 witnessed the toughest ever fight as the first runner up – Maruti Dzire stood 1 point less than Hyundai Verna. Hyundai Verna scored 118 points whereas Maruti’s popular sub-compact sedan scored 117 points. The Jeep Compass sealed the third position with 87 points. Talking more about the ICOTY 2018 winner, the sedan is offered in both petrol as well as diesel engines wherein the 1.6-litre Gamma petrol motor produces 121 BHP of power and 155 Nm of peak torque whereas the oil burner gets a 1.6-litre CRDI motor that produces 126 BHP of maximum power while developing 260 Nm of peak torque. The transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed manual gearbox along with a 6-speed AT as an option.
