Jeep India, an Indian arm of American luxury SUV maker is yet again geared for the unveiling of its much awaited Compass SUV in India on April 12. Ahead of its official debut in India; the company has teased the new Compass SUV through a video teaser which reveals nothing more than which is already known to us about the SUV. The company took its social media platforms and official website for the teasing of the Jeep Compass SUV. As the SUV is scheduled for its official unveiling on April 12, the official launch is speculated to be around August 2017. Similar to the concept showcased at 2016 LA Motor Show, the SUV seems to be a smaller version of Grand Cherokee which sports projector headlamps with LED DRLs, 7-slot grille design, compass badging on both the sides. The company is also betting big on the safety aspects of the SUV as it is claimed to have 50 plus safety features. However, the official teaser only revealed the exterior design of the 2017 Jeep Compass. The cabin hasn’t revealed yet which is speculated to get 7-inch infotainment system with Smartphone integration for Apple Car Play as well as Google Android Auto.
Based on small wide 4X4 architecture which also underpins Jeep Renegade, the Jeep Compass will be offered in both 4X2 and 4X4 variants. The new Jeep Compass will be the first product from the American SUV maker which will be locally assembled with 80-85% localization at Ranjangaon facility that will also be global hub for right hand drive markets. Moreover, FCA India has invested about $280 million in the plant for mobilizing it for localization purpose. India is also the first market to showcase the Compass SUV post its official global debut. Under the hood, the 2017 Jeep Compass will be offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The diesel engine will be a Fiat sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged unit which is capable of developing 170bhp of power along with peak torque of 350Nm. The engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual or 9-speed automatic unit. On the other hand, the petrol unit will be a 1.6-litre petrol unit that will feature on the SUV. Claimed to hit 100 kmph in less than 10 seconds, the Jeep Compass comes with a top speed of 194 kmph.
Expected to be priced in the range of INR 20 lakh INR 25 lakh, the SUV will be an important product for the carmaker as it will decide the fate of the brand in the domestic market. To be pitted against the likes of Hyundai Tucson and the Honda CR-V, it will also pose indirect threat to Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner as well.
