The Mahindra U301, which is based on the company’s top selling utility vehicle Bolero, was earlier believed to be the later’s successor. But judging by the recent picture, the SUV shows a lot of resemblance to the company’s premium SUV XUV500. This probably indicates that it could be a compact cousin to both the XUV500 and the Bolero.

The picture reveal the test mule in question had alternated wheels, with the front getting steel wheels and the rear sporting alloy wheels. The U301 comes with a XUV500-like front grille, Blinkers integrated in the head-lamp cluster as well as on the front fenders and Massive front bumper with a huge, square central air dam featuring honeycomb mesh. The SUV also comes with a tailgate mounted spear wheel along with 15-inch alloy wheeled wrapped in Apollo tyres. Judging by the pictures we can also conclude that the SUV will come with body-coloured door handles, High-mount LED stop lamps peeping through the rear windscreen, non-LED vertical taillamp cluster and Stepping boards on both sides.

Under the hood the new the sub-4 metre SUV is likely to be powered by an all-new 1.5-liter diesel engine and is believed to be paired to both an AMT and a manual transmission. Spyshots have shown the top-end (ZLX) variant lacking automatic climate control and 4WD switchgear, hinting that the U301 will primarily take aim at the utility market.
Upon its launch, which Mahindra claims will happen by the end of this fiscal, the new U301 will go up against the like of Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster, upcoming Hyundai Creta and Maruti Suzuki S-Cross.
