Maruti crosses the 1 crore sales mark

Maruti has reached the staggering sales figure of one crore, or ten million, units in the Indian marketplace. It has achieved this feat over 29 years, but there is a stark difference in the numbers when viewed more closely.

The first car Maruti Udyog sold in 1983 was the 800, and it attained the five million (half crore) mark in February 2006 – a total of 23 years since it first sold a car in India. However, Maruti Suzuki India Limited sold the next five million cars over six years; a startling growth rate that most manufacturers will only dream of.

Over the three decades that Maruti has been in India, it has attained and retained the industry's leading position thanks to the 800 and Omni early on and the Alto later. Today, the likes of the WagonR, Swift and Dzire fly off the shelves and people are often willing to wait over a half year for delivery for their chosen Maruti.
