Maruti strike ends for the second time

As of this morning, the strike at Maruti's Manesar facility has been called off. The company has agreed to take back 64 permanent workers but 30 will remain suspended. 1200 casual workers will also resume work. The Maruti management considered each suspended worker's case individually and reinstated them if the indiscipline wasn't severe.

Two committees, the 'Grievance Redressal Committee' and the 'Labour Welfare Committee' will be set up for labour welfare and to address grievances at the plant. The committee will have representatives from both the management as well as the workers. The workers will get no pay for the days of the strike. However, the company will now provide transport for the employees to and from their shifts.

The Maruti Suzuki board will be meeting at the end of the month, on October 29, to discuss the setting up of the plant at Gujarat among other things.

With the strike now concluded, Maruti can resume normal production, but the festive season ends by the end of next week. Customers prefer not to purchase cars in the last two months of the year since they prefer the manufacturing date of the new year. The new Swift is still eagerly awaited, but Maruti has missed the annual rush of the festive season this time around.
