At the launch event of the all-new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 that got underway this afternoon in New Delhi, the Indian automaker announced that it's small car has already gathered over 10,000 pre launch bookings.

The Indian automaker had opened the bookings of the Alto 800 on 1 October and within two weeks the pre launch bookings shot up to 6,500 units. This number finally stood somewhere over 10,000 units as of today, before the pricing of the small car was announced.

And looking at the price range of the new Alto 800, which falls between Rs 2.44 lakh for the base petrol variant and Rs 3.56 lakh for the top-end CNG variant, there is no doubt that Maruti's small car is going to pull in big numbers for the company.

Since 1984, Maruti’s entry-level models have outsold anything in India’s car market, as millions of middle-class families and first-time owners in the developing country flocked to its Maruti 800 model and its successor, the Alto. “Our engineering team has made many innovations to offer more space, improve driveability and safety to customers,” Shinzo Nakanishi, Maruti’s managing director said.

Furthermore, in the fiscal year that ended in March, Maruti sold over 310,000 Altos, making it the world’s biggest selling small car. Indians bought 2.02 million cars that year.

The new Alto 800 has replaced the current Alto 800 model and will coexist with the AltoK10 and the Maruti 800 (in BSIII markets only.)

The Alto 800 is being offered in petrol and CNG versions with four variants each – Standard (STD,) LX, LXi and LXi with Airbag.

Powering the petrol variant is a 3-cylinder, 800cc F8D unit that produces 50PS of max power and 69Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with cable shift mechanism. The familiar F8D engine is known for being high on fuel efficiency and low on maintenance. The CNG option also makes the Alto 800 one of most value-for-money cars with a low cost of ownership.

The ARAI tested fuel mileage figure stand at 22.7 kmpl for the petrol variant and 30.46 km/kg for the CNG variant. Fuel tank capacity of the Alto 800 is 35 litres.
