Maruti Suzuki, the Indo-Japanese carmaker, has strengthened its market domination in the Indian automotive industry by claiming eight slots in the top 10 bestselling passenger cars in India in January 2017. According to SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) data, the eight models include the Alto, Swift Dzire, WagonR, Maruti Swift, Celerio, Baleno, Vitara Brezza and the Maruti Omni. Other cars that made to the list included the Hyundai Grand i10 and the Hyundai Elite i20. In January 2016, Maruti Suzuki has 6 models on the top 10 selling passenger cars list. According to the data from SIAM, the Maruti Alto retained its bestselling position with 22,998 units sold in in January 2017 as against 21,462 units in January 2016. The Maruti Swift Dzire bagged the second spot with 15,087 units sold in January 2017 as compared to 14,042 units in January last year. The Maruti Wagon R stood third with 14,930 unit sales while the Maruti Swift premium hatchback came in at fourth place with 14,545 units sold in January 2017. The WagonR and the Swift’s sales stood at 12,744 and 14,057 units respectively in January 2016. The Hyundai Grand i10 stood at the fifth position with 13,010 units sold last month, while the Hyundai Elite i20 premium hatchback, with 11,460 units, took the sixth slot in Janaury 2017. Taking up the seventh position was the Maruti Suzuki Celerio small hatchback with 10,879 units sold last month as against 7,141 units in the same period last year. The Maruti Vitara Brezza sub-compact SUV sold 8,932 units last month to take the ninth slot while the Maruti Omni rounded off the top 10 list with 8,723 units sold in January 2017. Surprisingly, the Hyundai Creta and the Honda City failed to make the cut into the top 10 list in the month of January 2017, which made to the list in January last year. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 11,95,347 units in April-January period as against the industry total of 25,08,845 units, translating into an outstanding market share of 47.64 percent.
