Mercedes-Benz has ended 2016 on a strong note, launching 13 models in India, including the Mercedes-AMG C43 performance-tuned sedan that launched today. But the company is already making plans for more launches in the coming year. One of the biggest ones will be the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, which is set to debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January. This marks the third coupe from the German automaker in recent times. The first was the high-end S-Class coupe, followed by a C-Class model. The new E-Class will be placed right in the middle of these two.

In terms of exterior styling, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe looks very similar to the sedan version, especially up front. The new generation will be longer than the outgoing one, with a completely new platform underneath. It will be 4,826 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,430 mm tall. The hood gets some added muscle, and the rear features the same minimal design them of the C-Class and S-Class coupes. The rear fascia gets LED horizontal tail lights. The missing B-pillar is reminiscent of the S-Class, and a little of the older E-Class coupe remains in the glass ahead of the C-pillar. The added wheelbase of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe may translate to more rear space, but all that will be made clearer later on. For now, the new coupe will definitely get a large 12.3-inch COMAND floating display and an instrument cluster with three display options: progressive, sport and classic. Another 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster will be available as an option. The base end, however, will have to make do with a 7-inch display along with a central 8-4-inch screen. The premium infotainment system will get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, and the dashboard will feature round dials housed in a single frame along with the central display and the instrument cluster.

Moving away from the dashboard, the E-Class coupe gets fine leather upholstery as well as leather elements all around the cabin. A wireless inductive charging pad will also be present, ready to charge smartphones. The more interesting addition, however, would be the Drive Pilot advanced semi-autonomous driving system. This will definitely be something to look forward to when the E-Class coupe finally lands on roads. Also Read: 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA facelift launched in India; Priced at INR 31.40 lakh

Finally, let s look at what will power the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe. The most power engine will be a 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V6 engine that will deliver around 328 bhp of power at 5,250-6,000 rpm and 480 Nm of torque at 1,600-4,000 rpm. A 2.0-litre, turbocharged, in-line four-cylinder diesel engine will also be available, as seen with the E-Class sedan. This engine will deliver 191 bhp of power and 500 Nm of torque, and will feature variable turbine geometry and aluminium crankcase and cylinder head.

A total of three petrol engines and one diesel unit will be on offer at the launch, with power outputs ranging from around 181 bhp. All of them will come with Eco start and stop and a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, and will be compliant with Euro VI standards. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe will therefore be launched in three variants, all with two-wheel drive: the E 200, E 220 d and E 300. A fourth variant, the E 400 4MATIC with all-wheel drive, will launch later. Pricing has not yet been revealed, but may be presented at the Detroit show.
